The Drowsy Space is our designation for self-generated action when confronting the structures and demands. Its purpose is to give space to the unconscious and to create a feministic, safe and solidar ground to function and make art. We believe that the artists need the Drowsy Space to create.

On the 21st of November we will have a day of performances at the Museum of Impossible Forms (Keinulaudankuja 4 E, Helsinki). It is possible that some of the works are still in process. We encourage the artists to explore and to fumble.

We will serve soup (payment is voluntary).

Luca Piovesan + Andrea Mancianti

The accordion is proposed as a paradigmatic example of the unbalance described above. It is a relatively new instrument in contemporary music and composers can rely on very little literature to illuminate the working and sonic possibilities of this instrument and have relatively little repertoire to glean ideas from.
The activity of an accordionist devoted to new or experimental repertoire is, therefore, often marked by a strong active role in the generation of musical material, even more so in the case of Piovesan’s use of electronic effects originally meant for guitar, as a way to consciously and deliberately augment the instrument’s sonic possibilities.

Peter Wießenthaner

Peter Wießenthaner (b. 1951) is a composer, who performs concerts with live electronics, color-image elements and self-developed instruments. After studying the flute, he turned to composition with live electronics. Essential for his work with live electronics was the contact with Luigi Nono in the Experimental Studio of the SWF in Freiburg. On this occasion Wießenthaner presents his instrument SPO (Super Prime One) – an electronic string instrument utilising different tuning systems visually indicated by LEDs and is controlled by hand gestures. The instrument was premiered at the University of Frankfurt in 2019 and in December 2020 a composition by Phill Niblock for the instrument was premiered at Roulette, New York.

Hur Hur

Hur Hur is an experimental music project that was started by the multidisciplinary artist Timo Viialainen in 2012. In the heart of the project is an electroacoustic alto hurdy gurdy that has currently 7 different mics, 8 preamps, 6 separete outputs for the different string groups that concist of 4 gut strings, 2, nylon strings, 2 steel core cello strings and 6 acoustic guitar strings (steel). As a drone instrument this hurdy gurdy is melodically limited but sonically incredibly rich in texture. Its sound is addictive and raw. In the early years Hur Hur has played live in many events and festival in Europe and Northern America but recent live gigs have been rare.

ÄÄNEEN – Sonic Arts Month ends with a discussion between different local actors of the field. The topics of the discussion stem from the experiences gathered during the NeuroVerkko project that Äänen Lumo initiated in 2017 (read more about the project below). Some of the themes discussed are: new ways of collaboration and coordination, new creative, non-commercial, and inclusive practices, a report on the current discussion around the House of Visual Arts, as well as some thoughts and feelings on the experience of this now ending festival. Äänen Lumo invites all the local sonic arts communities, new and old, to take part in the discussion!

The discussion takes place online on the Zoom platform, you can get the participation link by sending an email to aanenlumo.info(at)gmail.com. The language of the discussion is English.

Äänen Lumo beyond NeuroVerkko

In 2017, Äänen Lumo’s project NeuroVerkko was supported by the Kone Foundation. The scope of the project was to reach out to the local sonic arts community in Helsinki, understand how its actors had changed in the last years, what are their interests, needs and struggles, and ultimately how could Äänen Lumo as an association rethink its function so that the association would be still be meaningful also twenty years after it was founded. In the meanwhile sonic arts expanded to encompass a multiplicity of different directions and practices, with boundaries that are often interlinked. Helsinki has become a very lively place, nurturing through associations, collectives and other permanent and temporary communities a constellation of sonic cultures producing and diffusing sonic arts in the widest possible acceptances of the term.

At the same time, many small and micro actors often tend to involuntarily “compete” with each other, subdividing resources. Most of the people involved in the NeuroVerkko project manifested a need for more (material and immaterial) resources for independent, experimental projects, operating outside of the commercial logic. Other common themes were a shared will to reformulate the duality “professional/amateur” on the one hand, and to rethink the historical opposition between audience and artists.

Three years later, the ÄÄNEEN – Sonic Arts festival is the first concrete step in the direction of consolidating this network in the name of creative, non-commercial inclusive practices. We invite you once again to meet us virtually to discuss the state of the local sonic arts scene, also in the light of new initiatives such as discussion around the House of Visual Arts and how the local sonic art audience feels about it. It will also be an occasion to comment on the state of this event and hopefully to start imagining more future initiative!

KUULOLLA is a concert series focusing on listening and sound and this time it is organised as part of ÄÄNEEN – Sonic Arts Month. The theme of this time’s concert is field recording. Field recording refers to recordings made outside the studio with the aim of recording individual sounds or a soundscapes that are made of several different sounds.

The evening’s concert will feature field-recording-based performances by Kati Roover and J. Koho. In addition to the performances a collection of the field recordings made at the same-day field recording event will be heard.

Field Recording Day

In addition to the KUULOLLA Concert, a field recording day will be organized. The idea of the event is to encourage active listening and sharing of observations in the form of field recordings. If you wish, you can offer recordings you make during the day to a field recording compilation to be played as a part of the concert program. Due to the current situation of the pandemic the field recording day is realised remotely, so it is possible to take part in it around the globe. The day is meant for all who are interested in field recording and it doesn’t require any pre-knowledge.

Kati Roover 

Kati Roover is an Estonian-Finnish visual and sound artist based in Helsinki. Roover weaves field recordings and other sound material into multilayered sound collages. She creates works that combine her current interests with a broad range of perspectives, human-non-human interaction, ecological and de-colonial thinking, mythical storytelling and feminist new materialisms.

Ana Gutieszca

Ana Gutieszca is a visual and sound artist born in the dry lands of the northern Mexican plateau. With a background in visual arts and music, she sculpts the unfathomable boundaries of drawing through the creation of analog instruments, the sonification of graphite and its deconstruction into performance art. Her music is rough as the desert, combining hypnotic brain-melting noise from self-made analogs and blistering broken techno beats from drum machines. She is also known for being a founder member of Third Space; a gallery located in the center of Helsinki where she curates the Sound Room concert series.

Marko Timlin

Marko Timlin is a Finnish-German sound artist, composer and installation artist. In his artistic work he focuses on the technical, acoustic and philosophic development of kinetic sound installations that merge sound art, music and visual arts. His artistic career began at the beginning of the 1990s in London. It lead him as a part of the alternative electronic music scene to the former East-Berlin where he founded among other things the band “tritop” one of the first Drum ’n’ Bass live-bands in Germany. During this time he also developed new methods of combining acoustic instruments with digital samplers, electronic sounds and computerized control systems. Nowadays he lives and works as a freelance artist close to Helsinki developing sound installations, composing computer, theater and dance music, performing with self-made experimental sound machines and giving workshops and seminars at universities and cultural centers.

Third Space

Third Space is a cross border transcultural collective that seeks to erase the invisible lines that separate us. Our collective identity and goals are shaped by diverse geopolitical views and backgrounds. Our aim is to observe from both ‘the outside in’ and ‘the inside out’ in order to create new ways of understanding what marginal and central are in Finnish society, and how to bridge them through dialogue. Third Space emerged as a response to the lack of inclusivity and diversity in the Finnish art scene. Inclusivity is not a fixed concept but a changing one. Our role is to identify its different forms and to respond to them.

Third Space is an incubator for generating ideas, a space for encounters, a space for people, art and its production. We endeavour to translate theories into actions. As the art field is becoming more and more capitalized and art practices are becoming increasingly individualized, we aim to accentuate collaborative practices over competitive ones. To support these ideas, Third Space is a space free of charge.

On February 12th, the first session of the in-the-future-recurrent event Station of Sounds takes place. Station of Sounds is realised within the context of the Station of Commons platform. It is a moment of discussions on the mode of production of physical objects related to sound form. What motivates the production of the physical object and how to articulate the artistic and political discourse embedded within the materiality of the object? During the session, four artists discuss their relationship to sound through playing their own latest physical production or releases of interest. After the discussion, we listen to the record under discussion played from a turntable.

Freja Bäckman is a multidisciplinary artist, educator and researcher based in Berlin and Helsinki, currently a resident at HIAP. Their practice consists of performance, sound, text, installations and workshops. They have recently published the vinyl record I was told I chop wood like a ballet dancer (On Circles) with Coda Press/Scott Elliott, in close collaboration with sound designer Manuela Schininà.

Free Frags / Steeve Bauras (FR):

Free Frags is a record label created in 2020 based in Paris. Free Frags states that “The manufacturing principle of a vinyl, a large scale reproducible engraving, gives to this object a memory status that can be compiled and archived”. The aim is to create a specific object at crossroads between sound and visual arts.

Samuli Tanner (FI):

Samuli Tanner is an electronic music composer & drummer from Finland. His experimental electronic music has a strange appeal: clumsy on purpose, sometimes dark, sometimes syrup, sometimes makes you dance, sometimes falls to pieces. Samuli has previously worked under the names Siihhi, Worldbank and Ponytail. He also works in groups like Myttys, Tiiu Helinä, Mustat Kalsarit & Market.

MYÖS (FI): DJ’s Cute Cumber, Valley Girl, & twenpettie

MYÖS is a Helsinki based DIY collective, party platform and co-care network for genre-fluid electronic music DJs, producers, organizers, party lovers and allies of currently underrepresented actors in the Helsinki club scene.

“Song for the Unknown” is inspired by L’Inconnue de la Seine, the death mask of a young unidentified woman who lived in the late 19th century. The story tells that she was found drowned in the river Seine with a smile on her face. Her death mask became a popular fixture on the walls of artists’ homes and has inspired numerous literary works. Later the mask was used for the head of the first aid mannequin Resusci Anne. For this reason, she is also referred to as the most kissed woman in the world.

Her face and beauty has captivated numerous people throughout the years, however, nobody knows her story. She is mute. “Song for the Unknown” is an attempt to study poetic language as a means to communicate and to reach out to otherness. The installation is a part of Heta Kaisto’s Doctor of Art research, where she studies Maurice Blanchot’s demand of language — its calling-into-question. When language reveals it’s silence and ambiguity it reminds us of its impossibility, its madness and its ambivalence.

Antti Ikonen: sound design

Antti Ikonen (MA) works in Aalto University as lecturer of sound design and music, the head of Sound in New Media Master’s studies and a member of Sound and Physical Interaction research group. Ikonen’s work covers music and sound design for a wide range of different kind of media, performances and works of art, including contemporary dance, theatre, short films, radio plays, art installations and new media. His current research relates to Helsinki New Children’s Hospital soundscape which was designed and realised by Ikonen and his students. In 2019 the soundscape project was awarded with Grand Prix in International Sound Awards in Hamburg, Germany.

Heta Kaisto (MA) is a doctoral student in visual culture at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, and currently working as the chief curator of Rauma Art Museum, Finland. She has a background in art history, comparative literature and philosophy, and she takes a deep interest in music and sound. In her practice-based research she explores writing as a mode of thinking in texts, images and sounds in the context of post-war theory and art. As a part of her artistic research, she has co-written and directed a radio play “A Hundred-year-old Night” based on archival materials of the Finnish Civil War in 1918.
