Äänen Lumo ry has rented a space for sonic arts that is opening this autumn and wants to now invite the sonic arts field for an open discussion on Saturday August 17th, 2024 at 14–17. The idea of the discussion is to present the space and the thinking behind it, and to discuss related hopes and needs of the different actors in the sonic arts field. 

We are at the moment in the process of preparing the venue and planning how it could work in the future, as a common location for sound art and experimental sonic practices. Welcome to take part in the discussion or just to see the space!

After a number years working towards a possible common space for the experimental sonic arts, Äänen Lumo is about to inaugurate Ääneen (working name) a pilot project in the heart of industrial Vallila, a community-driven, non-profit, DIY venue dedicated to sound art and experimental sonic practices. The large venue, financed by Kone Foundation and the city of Helsinki, will be hosting shared festivals, community events, workshops and more, and will officially open doors in the fall. Come join us on the night of the arts for an open door event where you can have a sneak peek of the new venue. You can listen to live music from the network of sonic communities of Helsinki, participate to a jam session, or just enjoy Ääneen communal atmosphere.

Äänen Lumo was born almost 30 years ago at the initiative of a small group of sound artists and experimental musicians. Naturally the shape of the association reflected the context in which it was formed as a vessel to curate and diffuse Finnish sound art, a very marginal practice at the time. The field was still strongly related to classic ideas of public/artists distinction, as well as top/down curatorial practices. Twenty five years later, the association, still an important reference point within a much more articulated field, has initiated a long term project of reform, in order to shift the accent, from traditional curatorial and diffusion practices, to those of community building and intra-communities networking. Some of the guidelines of this reform, as threads detected within the field itself have been: questioning power structures and gate-keeping practices, commoning, removing access obstacles to non-mainstream artistic activities with loose distinction between “producers” and “audiences”, horizontal knowledge sharing in the form of workshops and other peer learning events etc.

Come join us to a concert of Speculative Harmonies, performed by the members of Berlin-based just intonation specialist ensemble Harmonic Space Orchestra. They present a program of works by members Catherine Lamb, Thomas Nicholson and Marc Sabat spanning ideas of harmonic fusion & roughness, Jean-Philippe Rameau’s theories of intonation and a merging of inside/outside into a tonal field.

Äänen Lumo tuo toukokuussa kuultavaksi soolotöitään kontrabassoklarinetilla esittävän yhdysvaltalaisen säveltäjä John McCowenin. Hänen soittonsa tutkii klarinetin rajoja multifoonisten dronejen ja akustisen interferenssin avulla.

Tällä hetkellä Reykjavíkissa improvisaatiota työkseen opettava John on julkaissut musiikkiaan mm. Edition Wandelweiserin, International Anthemin, Astral Spiritsin, SUPERPANGin ja Dinzu Artefactsin kautta.

In May, Äänen Lumo brings the composer John McCowen for a visit in Helsinki, to perform his solo pieces for contrabass clarinet. His work focuses on expanding the limits of the clarinet by embracing multiphonic drones and beating harmonics.

John is currently residing in Reykjavík, where he’s teaching improvisation in the Iceland University of the Arts. His work has been released by Edition Wandelweiser, International Anthem, Astral Spirits, SUPERPANG and Dinzu Artefacts to name a few.

Charm of Sound & Forum Box presents Marcin Pietruszewski & Forces

Äänen Lumo & Forum Box gallery presents two artists working with SuperCollider sound programming language and multichannel sound performances: Berlin based composer Marcin Pietruszewski and Helsinki based multidisciplinary artist and experimental electronic musician Joonas Siren (also known as Forces).

Forum Box contemporary art gallery is showing an exhibition “Two Million Seconds” by Juuso Noronkoski, Tuomo Rainio and Joonas Siren. Both sound performances will be played from the 16-channel sound installation of Siren’s exhibited artwork “Kadonnut aika” (Lost Time). The evening will start with introduction of the exhibition by the artists. The event has been supported by Taike and Niilo Helanderin säätiö.
