Toinen Kerros ensemble is a freshly formed open collective that was born out of the need to explore and perform experimental music works in a group setting. At the heart of this ensemble is listening, experimentation, interpretation and discussion, emphasising that other than a pair of ears and mind of questions, there is no need for prior knowledge in music or instrument playing. Being the house band of the experimental sonic arts space Toinen Kerros, the ensemble is open to all sonic arts enthusiasts, lovers or anyone curious for sound experiments.

Celestial Navigators – multidisciplinary work for human voices, french horn, video and binoculars

Celestial Navigators is a multidisciplinary performance exploring the fragility of human decision-making through music, movement and film. The piece is co-creation by composer Tytti Arola, singer Annika Fuhrmann and horn player Elena Kakaliagou. Inspired by the instinctive navigation of migratory birds, the piece reflects on hesitation, choice, and direction on both a personal and societal level. Through the interplay of voice, French horn, and film, three artists approach the theme with both poetry and humour. Video material filmed in a rural Finnish landscape, featuring cranes and geese in flight formations, emphasizes the contrast between the certainty of nature and human uncertainty.

Tytti Arola is a composer, sound artist, and performer whose work explores the intersection of everyday life and the concert hall, multisensory composition, and spatial sound. Her works often incorporate electronics and multimedia elements such as video. Recently, she has been interested in researching the topic of care and embodiment of playing. Arola’s oeuvre has been presented at festivals including Helsinki Festival, Tampere Biennale, Musica Nova Helsinki, Nordic Music Days, Huddersfield Contemporary Festival, Our festival, and Flow Festival.

Annika Fuhrmann is a vocalist and sound artist working primarily in experimental music theatre, sound art, and improvised music. She has premiered numerous works composed specifically for her voice and collaborated in interdisciplinary projects with artists from various fields. Fuhrmann has also composed and recorded multiple sound works for YLE’s Ääniversumi radio program. Her artistic work is characterized by strong and versatile vocal and bodily expression, as well as a focus on socially engaged themes.

Elena Kakaliagou is a French horn player and internationally active artist in contemporary and improvised music. She regularly performs at festivals and concert venues around the world, both with her own projects and with leading contemporary ensembles. Her work blends drone, microtonality, soundscapes, and lyrical expression. With over 20 albums to her name and performances spanning theatre, performance art, and solo concerts, she has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music today.

Celestial Navigators – poikkitaiteellinen teos ihmisäänelle, käyrätorvelle, videolle ja kiikareille

Celestial Navigators on kokeellinen musiikkiteatteriteos, joka tutkii musiikin, videotaiteen ja liikkeen keinoin inhimillisen päätöksenteon haurautta ja peilaa sitä luonnosta löytyvän suunnistamisen varmuuteen. Muuttolintujen vaistonvaraisen navigoinnin innoittamana teos punoo yhteen henkilökohtaisen epäröinnin sekä laajemmat pohdinnat yhteiskunnasta, valinnoista ja suunnasta. Kolme taiteilijaa lähestyvät teemoja ihmisäänen, live-videon, käyrätorven, koreografian ja elokuvan vuorovaikutuksen kautta sekä runollisesti että huumorilla. Loppukesän maalaismaisemassa kuvattu videomateriaali kurkien ja hanhien auramuodostelmineen korostavat luonnon varmuuden ja ihmisen epäröinnin välistä voimakasta kontrastia.

Tytti Arola on säveltäjä, äänitaiteilija ja esiintyjä, jota kiinnostaa arjen tuominen konserttitiloihin, moniaististen sävellysten tekeminen sekä tilallisen äänen kanssa työskentely. Teoksissaan Arola hyödyntää usein elektroniikkaa ja viime aikoina hän on innostunut soittamisen kehollisuuden tutkimisesta sekä soitinrakennuksesta. Essay on Resonance is a 50-minute solo performance by Corey Smith, a Chicago-based performance artist and composer. The work unfolds as a live essay in sound, speech, light, and shadow, exploring resonance as both a physical phenomenon and a guiding metaphor for trans embodiment.

At the center of the work is the hammered dulcimer, an American folk instrument whose particular resonant characteristics are conceptually deconstructed and electronically manipulated. The piece scaffolds itself around the dulcimer, straddling the lines between performance lecture, shadow puppet show, pop concert, and ambient musical encounter. Meaning emerges through an accumulation, as sound, body, and space begin to vibrate together.

Tianjun Li (Timjune) is a Finland-based interdisciplinary artist and musician whose practice navigates the intersections of voice, sound, image, and collective engagement. By employing a vocal range extending beyond four octaves, Li constructs speculative landscapes where more-than-human entities emerge as metaphors for complex socio-ecological realities.

In recent projects, Li synthesizes extended vocal techniques with moving imagery to establish a resonant, multisensory environment. Bird-song motifs and layered choral textures interact with projected visuals, allowing the human voice to coalesce with non-human presences, exploring the fluid boundaries between organic sound and shifting ecological narratives, transforming the performance into a space of immersive transformation.

Improvised Dreams explores the inner logic of dreams and the multiplicity of meanings embedded within dream imagery. Seven musicians from diverse musical traditions come together through improvisation, drawing on shared dream experiences and the sounds heard within dreams as their common material. 

In this concert, dreams and the liminal space of dreams becoming a starting point for the musical creation, and simultaneously the musical improvisation guides the formation of new narratives and ways to embody and connect with dreams.

The practice of sharing dreams lies at the heart of the musicians’ bond and it has shaped both their artistic connection and their ongoing research into sonic materials. 

Earth Dreams refers to dreams as a shared, global phenomenon. Dreams are experienced everywhere, across cultures and interpretations, yet there is something shared in how they are felt. When reflected on together, new layers can continue to emerge.

Similarly, sound is heard and interpreted differently across contexts and traditions.

From this starting point, musicians come together in improvisation, bringing with them their own ways of hearing, perceiving, and making meaning of sound.

This concert it’s also part of the process of exploration for *Re-dreaming*: the third artistic component of cellist Iida-Vilhelmiina Sinivalo’s doctoral degree, that will focus on dreams, meaning-making, and different modes of listening.

Radio Silence explores what happens when movement slows and sound lingers in suspension. Between bridge and shoreline, between flame and ice, the work inhabits a space of interrupted passage. The performance is a work-in-progress sharing unfolding as a 45-minute listening and movement exploration. A slow field of attention where presence feels both fragile and enduring.

𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗨𝗣: Contrary to what was previously announced, Pasi Mäkelä unfortunately cannot participate in the next Suhina Klubi. Luckily, pianist Seppo Kantonen (b. 1963), unquestionably one of Finland’s most significant jazz innovators, will be joining us with Tatu Rönkkö and Jukka Kääriäinen on 27th of February.

Kantonen burst onto the forefront of Finnish jazz in 1985, when he was awarded the Yrjö Award by the Finnish Jazz Federation. Since then, he has performed with renowned artists both in Finland and internationally, and his masterful playing has been documented on approx. 200 albums. Kantonen is known for his extraordinary ability to immerse himself in — and move beyond — different musical genres. Whether the context is tradition-conscious jazz, classical music, avant-garde, or rock, the pianist is entirely at home. 

Tatu Rönkkö (b. 1983, Kuopio) is a Helsinki-based drummer and percussionist who uses everyday objects, percussion instruments, and electronics in an original and experimental way. Improvisation is present in all aspects of his work, from composition to performance. At present, Rönkkö is primarily focused on his bands Liima and Skalle & Sharon, as well as the duos Raoul Björkenheim & Tatu Rönkkö and the electroacoustic installation KALIMA & RÖNKKÖ GMBH.

Jukka Kääriäinen is a musician focused on experimental music, working with prepared acoustic guitar or electric guitar and effects. He has performed widely across Europe and at international festivals in the UK, Spain, and France.

Lau Nau tekee elektroakustisuuden ja lauluntekijyyden rajoilla liikkuvaa musiikkia käyttäen soittiminaan modulaarisyntetisaattoria, laulua, kenttänauhoituksia, vesiaiheita ja akustisia soittimia. Hän on julkaissut yhteensä kymmenittäin soololevyjä ja yhteisjulkaisuja kansainvälisillä levymerkeillä sekä keikkaillut aktiivisesti ympäri maailmaa, mm. Tokion Super Deluxessa, San Franciscon the Labissa sekä New Yorkin Pioneer Worksissa. Lau Nau on myös tunnettu Jussi-palkitusta elokuvamusiikistaan, monikanavaisista ääni-installaatioistaan sekä kollektiivisista kuuntelutyöpajoistaan. Tässä konsertissa hän esittää nelikanavaisen teoksen.

Jeremy Young is an analog electronic tape music artist from Tiohtià:kesta (Montreal), Quebec. He is a member of the experimental poetry/sound art group Cloud Circuit, the electroacoustic trio Sontag Shogun, and the library music trio Associated Sine Tone Services. Young’s improvisational techniques are based on random aleatoric principles, haptic practices, and deep listening techniques.

Young uses sine wave and square wave oscillator systems, magnetic tape loops, filtered radio signals, electromagnetic fields, and foley-inspired sounds from amplified surfaces and objects in his music. His approach is based on combining the physical processing of sound signals with complex musical content. This creates sonic narratives that bear traces of the recording, editing, and playback equipment used. In Helsinki, Young will present pieces based on his 2025 albums Cablcar (Halocline Trance) and Masses (We, Here & Now!).

Lau Nau, or Laura Naukkarinen, is a composer and sound artist whose music moves on the boundary between electroacoustic sounds and songwriting. Her palette consists of a modular synthesizer paired with acoustic instruments, singing voice and field recordings. She is developing her listening practice with collective listening sessions. Lau Nau exhibits her multi channel sound installations and is known for her music to films. She has toured abroad for 25 years, playing in venues such as Super Deluxe in Tokyo, the Lab & Castro Theatre in San Francisco and Blank Forms & Performa festival at Pioneer Works in New York. At this event she will perform a four-channel piece. 

Musafiilistely brings together artists based in Oslo and Helsinki for an evening of contemporary electronic music in both collaborative and individual settings.
