Suhina Klubi on Helsingissä järjestettävä tapahtumasarja, joka tarjoaa improvisoitua ja kokeellista musiikkia sekä äänitaidetta. Vuoden 2026 aikana kuullaan improvisoidun musiikin ulkomaisia ja kotimaisia kokoonpanoja.

Kevään 2026 ensimmäisessä konsertissa esiintyvät Johannes Berg & Johannes Gammelgaard yhtyeellään HEJ JOHANNES. Konserttipaikkana on Toinen Kerros Vallilassa.

HEJ JOHANNES on innovatiivinen improvisaatioduo, joka keskittyy musiikilliseen vuoropuheluun. Yhteistyön ytimessä ovat soittajien herkkyys ja kiinnostus toistensa ideoihin – ominaisuudet, joita he ovat kehitettäneet ja hioneet vuodesta 2014.

Duo koostuu saksofonisti Johannes Gammelgaardista ja rumpali Johannes Bergistä. Nämä kaksi lupaavaa nuorta muusikkoa ovat työskennelleet yhdessä viimeisten 11 vuoden aikana monenlaisissa kokoonpanoissa ja soittaneet muun muassa muusikoiden Liudas Mockunas, Jim Black, Haruhiko Okabe sekä viimeisimpänä tunnetun rummut/puhaltimet-duon Kasper Tom / Rudi Mahall kanssa. Näiden kokemusten myötä he ovat kehittäneet yhteisen musiikillisen kielen, joka pohjautuu melodisiin fragmentteihin, modaalisiin maisemiin ja abstrakteihin äänikokeiluihin.

Duomuodossa soittajien vapaus on lähes rajaton, mutta samalla vastuu suuri, sillä musiikista tulee helposti sekä paljasta että haurasta. Tämä pakottaa muusikot olemaan jatkuvasti valppaina ja tekemään päätöksiä musiikin muodosta ja suunnasta – vastuun duo ottaa vastaan vahvalla läsnäololla ja syvällä keskinäisellä luottamuksella.

HEJ JOHANNES julkaisi omanimisen debyyttialbuminsa tammikuussa 2020. Helmikuussa 2025 ilmestyi heidän toinen albuminsa, joka on liveäänitys Fylkingenistä Tukholmasta 13. huhtikuuta 2023.

Suhina Klubi serves as a platform for improvised and experimental music and sound art within Helsinki. During the year 2026 we present improvised music ensembles from Finland and abroad.

In the first edition of Suhina Klubi for the spring 2026, we are
proud to host Johannes Berg & Johannes Gammelgaard as HEJ JOHANNES. Concert venue is Toinen Kerros in Vallila.

HEJ JOHANNES is an innovative improv duo focusing on musical conversation. A responsiveness and an interest in each other’s ideas, which have been developed and refined since the start of the collaboration in 2014.

The duo consists of Johannes Gammelgaard on saxophone and Johannes Berg on drums. These two promising young musicians have worked together over the last 11 years in many different constellations and played with names such as Liudas Mockunas, Jim Black, Haruhiko Okabe and most recently the prominent drums/reeds duo Kasper Tom/Rudi Mahall. As a result of these experiences, they have developed a common musical language based on melodic fragments, modal landscapes and abstract sound experiments.

In the duo format, there is an almost limitless freedom and at the same time a great responsibility, as the music easily becomes both naked and fragile. It forces the musicians to constantly be aware and make decisions regarding the form and direction of the music – a task that the duo takes on with great presence and a deep mutual trust.

HEJ JOHANNES released their self-titled debut album in January 2020. In February 2025 their second album was released, which is a live recording from Fylkingen in Stockholm on April 13 2023.

Mark Reid Bulatovich 

Mark Reid Bulatović is a guitarist and composer from Slovenia and Scotland. His artistic interests are placed at the intersection of ecology, intimacy and ritual. A recent graduate of the Sibelius Academy, he has participated in international festivals in Shanghai (R.A.W), UK (Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Edinburgh Fringe & International Festivals) and Helsinki (SipoonÄänet, Musica Nova) with a variety of groups and as a soloist.

He is going to perform Svevning from the ComposerFredrik Rasten: 

Svevning is the result of a specific approach to just intonation on guitar, namely a real-time retuning of the open strings and the natural harmonics of these, guided solely by the ear of the performer.The piece was developed in many stages between 2017 and 2021. This development comprised both a gradual prolonging of the piece itself and adding new tuning details, as my knowledge about just intonation grew along with my perception and perceptiveness of the processes of tuning in just intonation.

Svevning is a highly personal piece. However, I would be happy if any guitarist would want to delve into it.

Hamidreza Keshvarpajuh, or Paژuh, is an artist from Tehran, Iran, whose creative practice spans the roles of saxophonist, producer, improviser, and curator. Rooted in Tehran’s alternative music scene, his work extends across projects such as Obad, Block Project, and Berenj Ensemble. His saxophone playing is a careful investigation of sound phenomenology, where tone and texture form a tactile experience. Sound emerges from the friction between breath, resonance, and the body, shaped by sensitivity to dynamics and tonal color.

His compositions draw on minimalism, progressive structures, Nu jazz, and the rhythmic and melodic patterns of Middle Eastern music, balancing repetition and variation to create a shifting perception of time passing through sound.

In his recent works, Paژuh has expanded his focus toward sound art, reconfiguring the saxophone’s physicality into a fluid, malleable sonic entity. He explores the liminal spaces between sound and silence through extended techniques, exploring the edges of musical expression and how the voice, instrument, and object overlap and transform one another..

Toinen Kerros ensemble is a freshly formed open collective that was born out of the need to explore and perform experimental music works. At the heart of this ensemble is listening, experimentation, interpretation and discussion, emphasising that other than a pair of ears and mind of questions, there is no need for prior knowledge in music or instrument playing. Being the house band of the experimental sonic arts space Toinen Kerros, the ensemble is open to all sonic arts enthusiasts, lovers or anyone curious for sound experiments. 

Silent night is a Christmas concert dedicated to open scores written by Jürg Frey, Sarah Hennies, Tim Parkinson.

HelsinkiXperiment is an ongoing performance series dedicated to bringing visiting artists into dialogue with Helsinki’s experimental scene. Each edition invites traveling performers to collaborate with locally based artists through experimentalinterdisciplinary improvisation that blends sound, movement, and audiovisual practices.

For its second edition, HelsinkiXperiment focuses on Nordic and cross-border artistic exchange. The program features two traveling musicians, one from Norway and one from Iran, who will collaborate with Helsinki-based experimental artists in a shared improvisational encounter. Rooted in a Norwegian approach to improvisation characterized by spaciousness, interaction, and a dramaturgical sensibility, this edition enters into conversation with Helsinki’s experimental scene.

Suhina Klubi on Helsingissä järjestettävä tapahtumasarja, joka tarjoaa improvisoitua ja kokeellista musiikkia sekä äänitaidetta. Vuoden 2025 aikana kuullaan improvisoidun musiikin ulkomaisia ja kotimaisia kokoonpanoja.

Syksyn 2025 viidennessä konsertissa esiintyvät Antti Lötjönen & Katariin Raska. Konserttipaikkana on Toinen Kerros Vallilassa.

Antti Lötjönen on suomalaisen jazzin keskeisimpiä tekijöitä – monipuolinen basisti ja säveltäjä, joka on yli kahden vuosikymmenen ajan ollut näkyvästi esillä suomalaisen jazzin terävimmässä kärjessä. Hän on esiintynyt yli 30 maassa ja soittanut yli sadalla levyllä, muun muassa yhtyeissä Ilmiliekki Quartet, The Five Corners Quintet, Verneri Pohjola Quartet, Aki Rissanen Trio, Mikko Innanen Autonomus, Timo Lassy Band ja 3TM. Lötjönen johtaa omaa yhtyettään Antti Lötjönen Quintet East.

Hänen työnsä on huomioitu muun muassa Yrjö-palkinnolla (2024) ja Pori Jazzin Vuoden taiteilija -tunnustuksella (2015). Lötjönen on myös osa valtionpalkittua Hietsu is Happening! -kollektiivia.
Kansainvälisesti Lötjönen on kiertänyt Eurooppaa muun muassa Jeff “Tain” Watts Trion jäsenenä ja esiintynyt mm. Blue Note -klubeilla New Yorkissa, Tokiossa ja Milanossa sekä merkittävillä festivaaleilla Euroopassa, Yhdysvalloissa, Kanadassa ja Australiassa.

Vuonna 2025 hän julkaisi kitaristi Kalle Kaliman kanssa duolevyn Stings, Bites and Scratches, jonka myötä duo kiersi laajasti konsertoimassa.

Katariin Raska on monipuolinen muusikko ja improvisoija, joka asuu Tallinnassa, Virossa. Häntä kiehtovat soittimiensa estetiikka ja soittomahdollisuudet, ja hänen projekteillaan on usein yhteys perinnemusiikkiin ja vapaaseen improvisaatioon.

Hän on suorittanut kansanmusiikin kandidaatin tutkinnon Tarton yliopiston Viljandin kulttuuriakatemiassa (2010) sekä kandidaatin ja maisterin tutkinnot Norjan musiikkiakatemiassa (2012, 2016).
Katariin tekee yhteistyötä eri alojen taiteilijoiden, kuten kirjailijoiden, runoilijoiden, kansanmuusikoiden ja vapaaimprovisoijien kanssa.

Katariin on yksi virolaisen munniharppumusiikin keskeisistä hahmoista ja improvisoidun säkkipillimusiikin uranuurtaja Virossa.

In the fourth edition of Suhina Klubi for the fall 2025, we are
proud to host Antti Lötjönen & Katariin Raska. Concert venue is Toinen Kerros in Vallila.

Antti Lötjönen is one of the central figures in Finnish jazz – a versatile bassist and composer who has been a prominent presence at the forefront of Finnish jazz for over two decades. He has performed in more than 30 countries and played on over a hundred recordings, including with groups such as Ilmiliekki Quartet, The Five Corners Quintet, Verneri Pohjola Quartet, Aki Rissanen Trio, Mikko Innanen Autonomus, Timo Lassy Band, and 3TM. Lötjönen also leads his own ensemble, Antti Lötjönen Quintet East.

His work has been recognized with awards such as the Yrjö Award (2024) and Pori Jazz Artist of the Year (2015). Lötjönen is also part of the state-awarded collective Hietsu is Happening!
Internationally, Lötjönen has toured Europe as a member of Jeff “Tain” Watts Trio and has performed at Blue Note clubs in New York, Tokyo, and Milan, as well as at major festivals across Europe, the United States, Canada, and Australia.

In 2025, he released a duo album titled Stings, Bites and Scratches with guitarist Kalle Kalima, followed by an extensive concert tour.

Katariin Raska is a multi-instrumentalist and improviser based in Tallinn, Estonia. Intrigued by the esthetics of her instruments and their playing possibilities, her projects often have a common link
with traditional music and free improvisation.

She holds a BA in traditional music from University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy (2010) and BA and MA from Norwegian Academy of Music (2012, 2016). Katariin collaborates with artists from various disciplines like writers, poets, folk musicians and
free improvisers.

She is one of the front figures in Estonian jaws harp music and the pioneer of improvisational music on Estonian bagpipes.

Kuihtuminen ja kuolema on kolmas ja viimeinen osa Just a Gardener -esitystrilogiasta. Esitys on vuoden 2025 Höyhentämön pääohjelmistossa. Butotanssia sekä videotaidetta yhdistävän teoksen koollekutsujana, koreografina ja tanssijana toimii Minja Mertanen. (English below.)

Kolmiosainen teossarja etenee luonnon kiertokulun mukaan. Teossarjan ensimmäinen osa Kaipuu esitettiin Galleria Kasvihuoneen avajaisissa Helsingissä kesällä 2021 sekä Ekata Teatren Blendi-tapahtumassa Bottalla Helsingissä syksyllä 2021. Kaipuu kuvasi kevään ensimmäisiä tapahtumia luonnossa ja puutarhurissa: Kuinka kasvin siemenet heräävät eloon pitkän talven jälkeen. Miltä tuntuu puutarhurin pakottava tarve upottaa sormet multaan ja tuntea yhteys juuri tähän maahan, tähän paikkaan ja aikaan; kuinka maa ravitsee myös ihmistä.

Teossarjan toinen osa Kasvu ja kukoistus sai ensi-iltansa Performance Sirkuksella Helsingissä kesäkuussa 2023 ja sitä esitettiin Jyväskylän kesä -festivaalilla heinäkuussa 2023 ja sen tuotti Höyhentämö. Teossarjan toinen osa sijoittui luonnon kiertokulussa keskikesään, aikaan jolloin luonto on kukkeimmillaan. Samalla esitys oli ylistys eri tavoin ja eri ikäkausina kukkivalle, monimuotoiselle naisluonnolle.

Nyt tekeillä oleva kolmas osa, Kuihtuminen ja kuolema etenee luonnon syyskauteen ja talvehtimiseen: lakastumiseen, mätänemiseen, käpertymiseen ja hiljaiseen kuoleman prosessiin. Samalla esitys juhlistaa elämää, luonnon kiertokulkua ja syklisyyttä; vain loppuminen voi mahdollistaa uuden alkamisen. Kuolema tapahtumana on yhteiskunnassamme vaiettu ja piilotettu. Esitys tuo kuolemaan johtavan prosessin näyttämölliseen tarkasteluun ja haastaa meidät kohtaamaan oman rajallisuutemme ja haavoittuvaisuutemme.

Esitys lähestyy ei-inhimillistä maailmaa luonnon prosessien kautta. Esitys kehollistaa syksyn ja talven prosesseja toisten kasvien kuollessa ja toisten vetäytyessä lepotilaan. Esityksessä käsitellään paitsi ihmisen kuolevaisuutta niin myös luonnon kuihtumista ja syklisyyttä, ihmiselämää suurempia ajallisia kaaria.

Kuolema on yksi harvoista asioista joka koskettaa meitä kaikkia sukupuoleen, alkuperään, luokkaan, etuoikeuksiin, taitoihin ja lajiin katsomatta. Näin se tasa-arvoistaa meitä paitsi muiden ihmisten, myös muiden eliölajien kesken.

Minja Mertanen on pitkän linjan butôtaiteilija joka on työskennellyt butôn parissa 20 vuoden ajan. Hän on koulutukseltaan tanssinopettaja, tanssi-liiketerapeutti, joogaohjaaja ja opiskelee parhaillaan somaattista liiketerapiaa. Mertanen työskentelee tanssijana, esitystentekijänä sekä esitystaiteilijana Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskuksella, Toisissa tiloissa ryhmässä sekä Höyhentämössä. Mertanen työskentelee butôtaiteilijana ja -opettajana Suomessa ja ulkomailla, viime vuosina lähinnä Espanjassa ja Ranskassa. Mertanen on perustanut Be(a)ware Butoh Festivaalin Helsinkiin.

Withering and Death is the third and final part of the Just a Gardener performance trilogy. The performance will be in the main program of Höyhentämö in 2025. Minja Mertanen is the convener, choreographer and dancer of the work, which combines buto dance and video art.

The three-part series of works progresses according to the cycle of nature. The first part of the series, Kaipuu, was performed at the opening of Galleria Kasvihuone in Helsinki in the summer of 2021 and at Ekata Teatre’s Blendi event at Botta in Helsinki in the fall of 2021. Kaipuu depicted the first events of spring in nature and in the gardener: How the seeds of a plant come to life after a long winter. What does it feel like for a gardener to sink their fingers into the soil and feel a connection to this very land, this place and time; how the land also nourishes people.

The second part of the series, Growth and Blossoming, premiered at Performance Sirkus in Helsinki in June 2023 and was performed at the Jyväskylä Summer Festival in July 2023 and was produced by Höyhentämö. The second part of the series was set in the cycle of nature in midsummer, a time when nature is at its most blossoming. At the same time, the performance was a praise for the diverse, feminine nature that blooms in different ways and at different ages.

The third part, Withering and Death, currently in progress, progresses to the autumn season and wintering of nature: wilting, rotting, curling up and the silent process of death. At the same time, the performance celebrates life, the cycle and cyclicity of nature; only an end can enable a new beginning. Death as an event is silenced and hidden in our society. The performance brings the process leading to death into dramatic examination and challenges us to face our own limitations and vulnerability.

The performance approaches the non-human world through natural processes. The performance embodies the processes of autumn and winter as some plants die and others retreat into dormancy. The performance deals not only with human mortality but also with the withering and cyclicity of nature, temporal arcs larger than human life.

Death is one of the few things that touches us all, regardless of gender, origin, class, privilege, skills, or species. In this way, it equalizes us not only with other people, but also with other species.

Minja Mertanen is a long-time butoh artist who has worked with butoh for 20 years. She is a trained dance teacher, dance movement therapist, yoga instructor and is currently studying somatic movement therapy. Mertanen works as a dancer, performer and performance artist at the Research Center for Reality, the Other Spaces group and Höyhentämö. Mertanen works as a butoh artist and teacher in Finland and abroad, in recent years mainly in Spain and France. Mertanen is the founder of Be(a)ware Butoh Festival.
