MENTAL ALASKA presents: AN EVENING WITH ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO

    Live:

    Arrington De Dionyso (USA)

    Hur Hur

    3rd Encounter – Schweizer / Halme / Inkilä

    Toinen Kerros, Nokiantie 2-4 Helsinki

    Wed 20th May 19-22

    Tickets: 15/10e

    *******************************************

An uncompromising voice in contemporary music, ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO integrates ancient soundmaking techniques with trans-modernist inquiries into the nature of consciousness. His propulsive improvisations utilize voice and reeds as multiphonic tools blazing through the liminal spaces between shamanic seance and rock and roll ecstasy. In 1995 he founded the genre destroying No Wave Gospel band Old Time Relijun, releasing albums on K Records. In 2009 he created Malaikat dan Singa (“Angels and Lions”), a powerful new project integrating aggressive dancehall rhythms with gamelan scales, using the Indonesian language to interpret the mystic poetry of William Blake.

HUR HUR is the solo project started in 2012 by multidisciplinary artist Timo Viialainen. It is based on the experimental use of an electroacoustic alto hurdy gurdy. This drone based instrument is mostly used in folk music, but used here to create an immersive wall of sound that also contains hints of melodic repetitive parts and rhythms. The live performances are an intense mix of slowly building compositional pieces and improvisation. Hur Hur has performed at various festivals and events in Europe and North America.

3RD ENCOUNTER is the trio of Livia Schweizer, Hepa Halme & Turkka Inkilä. They explore the frequencies of flutes and different wind instruments, sometimes augmented with electronics.

17.5. / Space talk! Where to from here? Past and future of Toinen Kerros

Have you found the space valuable for the sonic arts community? Do you want to see it continue? Please join us in this discussion, we want to hear from you! Your support and presence is essential for us to understand how to continue our collective work

Now we are starting our third and final year of Kone Foundation support. As we approach this milestone, we would like to have an honest conversation about the sustainability of our project, our resources, and our volunteer network.

The questions that we would like to answer together are:

Is this space valuable for the communities? When the Kone Foundation grant ends, would it be possible to continue? Could this be a space shared by many organizations or individuals? What are the limits and possibilities of running a space communally?

Whether you have enjoyed the past couple of years or are concerned about the future of the space, and more in general about the shrinking of spaces and resources for arts, your voice is really important. Come share your thoughts on the challenges, options, risks, and possibilities that lie ahead.

Afterwards we would like to invite you for a collective jam. Feel free to bring your own instruments if you wish to perform as well!

There will also be performances offered by Andrea Mancianti, Heu Hsu & Sulo Kolehmainen (magnetic objects / electronics) and Libero Mureddu and more. Thank you and save the date!

    Time: 17.5.

    Discussion starts at 16.00

    Performances from 18.30 onwards

Playrec – build and play recycled materials!

Come and explore how different material can be turned in musical sounds.

In this workshop we build musical instruments (chordophones, idiophones, membranophones, aerophones) from all kinds of recycled materials. Some basic designs are proposed with the materials and tools provided. Other materials include recycled items, plastic tubes, strings, tuning pegs. You can also bring your own materials and designs, but you can also leave some space for chance.

We will then perform an improvised piece at the end of the workshop on Saturday at 19:30.

The workshop is run by Henna Tahvanainen, who is a researcher, lecturer, and amateur luthier of musical instruments. www.kantelista.wordpress.com

There is a material fee of 10 euros. Maximum number of participants is 10.

9.5. / Syklit jotka puhkeavat / Cycles that blossom

This evening is a celebration for Mikko Sarvanne’s solo EP release “syklit jotka puhkeavat”. In addition to their own performance, Mikko has invited Lumi Mannermaa and Mikael Karkkonen to perform live. An animation film “ryppy” by Oona Pennanen and Mikko Sarvanne will have its public premiere.

    Welcome!

    Mikko Sarvanne

For composer Mikko Sarvanne, music reveals places: abstract, invisible spaces of harmony, and tangible, physical spaces that are constructed in real time through performance. On ”syklit jotka puhkeavat” EP Sarvanne invites stones, water and sandpaper to shape a space of cycles — and the cycles to blossom as glowing pillars of resonance.

    Lumi Mannermaa

Lumi Mannermaa is a sound artist based in Helsinki who works between the realms of failure and success, using absurdity as a medium for communication. In her practice she uses augmented toy instruments, free improvisation, experimental instrument building, pataphysical conceptuality and modern day nuisances, such as social media content streams, covering subjects such as mistakes, the subconscious, and the ugly and humorous, to name a few.

    Mikael Karkkonen

“Mikael Karkkonen trying to regulate their heartbeat in front of an audience for approximately fifteen minutes”

Mikael is a playwright, dramaturg and producer. Their artistic work moves across theatre, performance and media art. In recent years, they’ve worked extensively as a writer, dramaturg and producer—both independently and as part of collaborative teams. At present, they’re interested in works that play with the contractual nature of performance and its structure. They’re particularly drawn to performance as a social event, and how the internet and technology might be integrated into live work.

    “ryppy”

“ryppy” is a short animation of stones and sandpaper, by Oona Pennanen and Mikko Sarvanne, created in Mustarinda residency and Villa Bergbacka in 2025. Oona Pennanen is an artist working with moving image and body. Past few years they have focused on editing documentaries and playing around in low-threshold collaborative moments. They are fascinated by the quiet humor of everyday life.

    8.5. / Pulse Index 002

Pulse Index returns with a new live programme exploring experimental sound, moving image, and spatial experience.

Bringing together artists working across ambient, audiovisual performance, and live composition, the evening unfolds as a sequence of immersive sets where sound and image drift between structure and improvisation.

    _ б е л к а

белка’s soundscapes use cassette tape loops, modular synthesisers, and field recordings to create layered, atmospheric compositions. Through processes of augmentation and degradation, he attempts to transform raw auditory material into resonant echoes of nostalgia and spectral presences. His connection to nature, informed by frequent forest explorations, imbues his work with an organic, primal quality.

    STATIC CHANNEL

Static Channel is a Canadian audiovisual duo based in Berlin and Helsinki, shaping immersive experiences where sound and visuals ebb and flow in dynamic conversation. Composed of new media artist and synthesist Monika Hauck and electronic producer and bass guitarist Alex Iso, the duo navigates shifting sonic landscapes, pulling on threads from ambient, electronic, and experimental influences. Their work takes form through multidisciplinary installations and live performances, where improvisation and movement guide the ever-evolving dialogue between space, sound, and image. Each moment exposes unseen connections and unfiltered presence.

With a background in fine art and creative new media, she channels her artistic vision into digital formats exploring 3D animation, node-based visuals, and live VJing.

Toinen Kerros is a volunteer-led, low threshold, DIY space for presenting, practicing, and encountering sonic art practices. VJ DIN-AVI

DIN-AVI is a VJ and visual designer whose VJ sets display themes of lost knowledge, esotericism and digitalism. The visuals draw parallels between the alchemical and the computational. By using charts, symbols and incantations, both the digital world and the alchemical draw upon esoteric scientific methods in an attempt to improve humanity. The visuals play on this relationship, with references to charts, digital artefacts, ancient relics and forgotten environments.

chik white is the alias of Nova Scotia-based artist and improviser Darcy Spidle. While best known for his work with the jew’s harp, his practice has expanded to include voice, nose flutes, horns, harmonica, guitar, and video. He has released numerous albums on international labels such as Kraak, Notice, Feeding Tube, Full Spectrum, Chocolate Monk, and Sound Holes. His collaborators include Bill Nace, Xuan Ye, Colin Fisher, Daniel Tapper, Naomi McCarroll-Butler, Chad VanGaalen, Sam Shalabi, and Bekah Simms.

Slice, Lisa Holmén and Monia Kimara play noise together with various instruments, languages, improvised voice, good food and fresh spring spirit. Expect madness, hilarity and boisterous tones. The group assembles for the first time together in the form of the triangle with their backgrounds from multiple musical groups, visual arts, performance art and dance.

Amon Düde‘s music used to be high-tempo cut-up tape collage. He utilizes collapsing cassette players, carefully crafted tape collages and obsolete effect devices. He is a kind of a full body theremin, as every vibration of the body has a direct effect on the music. The same goes also the other way, the sounds in turn guiding the body movements. With tapes, coincidence always has a huge role. The decaying equipment and aging human body also play a key role. Amon Düde manages to create a unique balance of razorsharp dynamics and slapstick humour.
