About the performers
Si Paton is a composer, improviser, bassist, academic, event curator, noisemaker, smart mouth and general antagonist. He has completed his PhD at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and previously studied electric bass and jazz composition at University of West London. As an improviser, he has played with many well known figures, and was previously the bassist and bandleader in the math-jazz group Selectric. His solo performances, the trans-Atlantic no wave duo Phame, as well as a duo with drummer Rob Nettleship are currently his most prominent projects. He was previously the founder and curator of Thinking/Not Thinking Fest, and currently runs the concert series Don’t Mind Control. Picture credits John Convery.
Gonzalo Muruaga Olguin is an Argentinian electric guitar player, improviser and composer. His musical approach combines elements of jazz, free improvisation, contemporary music, experimental music, sound investigation, and interdisciplinary cooperation. He is active in the Nordic and Baltic experimental music scenes and holds a degree of Contemporary Improvisation from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater. In his artistic work he focuses on pushing the limits of deep listening with electroacoustic music and sound design.
Teemu Mustonen is an improvising percussionist from Helsinki. He explores the possibilities of the drum kit and its preparation in solo and ensemble contexts, and performs widely in various ensembles and projects.
Heliä Mailiis Viirakivi is a versatile Finnish MMus vocalist-flutist, performer, improviser, and composer working across innovative new music, experimental music, improvisation, and interdisciplinary concepts. In her art she blends extended vocal and instrumental techniques with folk melodies, and strong classical singing to shape her unique artistic voice.

Cecilia Enberg and Eric Malmberg mix sounds from the legendary Düben Organ, built in 1608, with the Buchla synthesizer, which was constructed in 1968. The result is long atmospheric drones. The duo plays to an ambient film that shows suggestive patterns. Cecilia is an interdisciplinary artist with roots in printmaking, and Eric also plays in Sagor & Swing. This Summer, they have performed at The Great Noise performance festival, Fylkingen Satelliter at Bio Savannen, and PLX festival.

Libero Mureddu is an Italian-Finnish pianist, improviser, composer, and researcher based in Helsinki. Active in the Finnish and European improvised music scene, he currently leads the ‘murmur trio’ with bassist Andrea Grossi and drummer Cristiano Calcagnile. In his research projects he combines improvisation, composition, digital audiovisual projections, and algorithmic scores to create unpredictable performative scenarios. He teaches free and electroacoustic improvisation at the Sibelius Academy.
Eevi Oittinen is a visual artist fascinated by the interaction of the visual and the sonic arts. Her work includes traditional painting in mixed media as well as interdisciplinary collaborations that bring together painting and contemporary music. With an analogue overhead projector, Oittinen’s drawing becomes a (mute) musical instrument. In direct dialogue with improvised music, free from the hierarchy of one illustrating the other, focus is on presence and communication.

Sulo Kolehmainen is an improviser and a sound artist based between Helsinki and Venezia. His work usually involves field recordings, nonlinear feedback systems and often some form of collaboration. His engagement with sound deals with memory, agency and inquiries about how the human condition and the so called natural world wrap around each other.
Livia Schweizer is a flutist, improvisor, educator and artistic researcher raised in Italy and based in Helsinki. As an active and versatile freelancer, she enjoys to explore from different angles how improvisation and non-conventional notation can be used as tools for intercultural and interdisciplinary collaboration. Co-founder of Earth Ears Ensemble, she has premiered works by Tytti Arola, Mioko Yokoyama, Turkka Inkilä, Meriheini Luoto and more. She teaches at the International School of Helsinki and is a doctoral candidate at Uniarts, Sibelius Academy.

Who’s playing?
Kenneth Jimenez is a bassist, composer and photographer from Costa Rica, currently based in New York City. Active in the international jazz and improvised music scene, he has collaborated with artists such as Dave Liebman, Angelica Sanchez, Tony Malaby and Gerald Cleaver, and has appeared at venues including the Kennedy Center, The Jazz Gallery and the National Theatre of Costa Rica. His quartet project Sonnet to Silence will release its debut album on WeJazz Records in 2023. Alongside his musical practice, he develops a strong visual language, recently presenting his award-winning photography project Verolís in Helsinki.
Libero Mureddu is a pianist, improvisor, composer and music technologist. He designs unconventional performative spaces to enable the unexpected and innovative. Active in the European improvised music scene, among his current projects are his artistic research Embodied Algorithms and the murmur trio with Cristiano Calcagnile and Andrea Grossi. Josefiina Vannesluoma is a jazz vocalist, flutist and improviser based in Helsinki. Her vocal agility and unique multi-genre compositions with her ensembles Mortal Lease and Signe have captivated audiences across Northern Europe. She draws inspiration from parks, cafés, the sounds of nature, and the music of languages.
Jukka Kääriäinen is a musician focused on experimental music. His instruments range from prepared acoustic guitar to electric guitar with effects, depending on the situation. He has performed widely in Europe and at international festivals in the UK, Spain and France, and regularly collaborates with leading improvisers and contemporary composers, premiering works by Riikka Talvitie, Sebastian Hilli, Sami Klemola, Clara de Asís and Tytti Arola.

Ryosuke Kiyasu is a pioneering snare drum soloist who has redefined percussion since 2003. Alongside his solo shows, he drums for noise-grind duo SETE STAR SEPT, the Kiyasu Orchestra, Keiji Haino’s Fushitsusha, and has co-founded Canada’s cult hardcore unit The Endless Blockade. With 200-plus releases spanning solo work and band discographies, Kiyasu continues to tour globally, delivering a singular, high-impact blend of extreme dynamics, physicality, and avantgarde vision that has made the snare drum a headline instrument.

Syksyn 2025 toisessa konsertissa esiintyy duo Janne Tuomi & Mika Kallio.
Mika Kallio ja Janne Tuomi ovat soittaneet yhdessä vuosikymmenten varrella silloin tällöin eri yhtyeissä ja duona. Roku Records tarjosi mahdollisuutta tehdä lyömäsoitinlevy ja se on ilmestymässä vuoden 2025 aikana. Albumilla kuuluu kaksikon pitkät ja laajat urat monenlaisen musiikin parissa. Mukana on erilaisten rumpujen lisäksi laaja kattaus gongeja, tamtameja ja erilaisia metallisia lyömäsoittimia sekä vibrafoni. Innoituksena ovat toimineet sisäinen ja ulkoinen avaruus sekä erilaiset filosofiset pohdinnat maailmankaikkeudesta eri vuosisadoilta. Inspiraation lähteinä on käytetty myös runoutta. Sävellykset ja improvisaatiot nivoutuvat yhteen luoden monenlaisia rikkaita maisemia.

Suhina Klubi serves as a platform for improvised and experimental music and sound art within Helsinki. During the year 2025 we present improvised music ensembles from Finland and abroad.
In the second edition of Suhina Klubi for the fall 2025, we are
proud to host duo Janne Tuomi & Mika Kallio.
Mika Kallio and Janne Tuomi have played together occasionally over the decades in different ensembles and as a duo. Roku Records offered them the opportunity to make a percussion album, which will be released during 2025. The album reflects the duo’s long and extensive careers across many kinds of music. In addition to various drums, it features a wide range of gongs, tam-tams, and different metallic percussion instruments, as well as vibraphone. The inspirations include inner and outer space, along with philosophical reflections on the universe from different centuries. Poetry has also served as a source of inspiration. Compositions and improvisations intertwine, creating a variety of rich soundscapes.

Nuo Nuohoojat is a free improvisation band consisting of singer and voice improviser Johanna Vahtola, shakuhachi and saxophone player Jaakko Kuikka, and synthesizer player Melik Turunen. The music of the Nuo Nuohoojat trio is created through free improvisation. Central to the band’s expression are small, delicate, and incomplete sounds. The small sounds are treated as if they were decimals of whole sounds. Thus, the whole sounds are the sum of their parts, the combined result of the musicians’ gestures and interaction. The Nuo Nuohoojat trio’s first performance was heard at the Kaekuu festival in Sammatti in July 2025.
Another act that will play in the event is duo by Vesa Lehko & Juha Rautio.

Nuo Nuohoojat on vapaaimprovisaatio-yhtye, johon kuuluvat laulaja Johanna Vahtola, shakuhachin ja alttosaksofonin soittaja Jaakko Kuikka sekä syntetisaattorin soittaja Melik Turunen. Trion musiikki syntyy esiintymishetkellä vapaasti improvisoiden. Yhtyeen ilmaisulle keskeistä ovat pienet ja herkät, keskeneräiset äänet. Pieniä ääniä käsitellään ikään kuin kokonaisten äänten desimaaleina. Kokonaiset äänet ovat näin osiensa summa, muusikoiden eleiden ja vuorovaikutuksen yhteenlaskettu tulos. Nuo Nuohoojat trion ensimmäinen esiintyminen kuultiin Kaekuu festivaalilla Sammatissa heinäkuussa 2025.

Born in 1952 in Turku, Finland, Sjöström studied at Lone Mountain College and the San Francisco Art Institute. Studies with Hari Mann, Leo Wright and Steve Lacy. Participated in workshops by John Cage, George Russell and Bill Dixon. He lives in Berlin.
From 1978 he worked with Derek Bailey, Teppo Hauta-aho, Paul Lovens, John Russell, Paul Rutherford, among others. From 1990 to 2016 close collaboration with Cecil Taylor. Sjöström has founded numerous ensembles for contemporary improvised music, including Quintet Moderne, Sestetto Internazionale, MOVE Quintet, Flight Mode and he is the initiator and artistic director of the concert and festival series SoundScapes.

Bass clarinetist Heikki Nikula (b. 1961) studied at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, and gave his debut concert 1988. He has also attended master classes in England, Hungary, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Nikula plays at Helsinki Filharmonia since 1991 and is an original – and still active – member of Avanti! chamber orchestra (founded in 1983). He performs frequently as a chamber musician and soloist, and has had a recital in several festivals including Helsinki Biennale and Viitasaari Time of Music. His repertoire consists of contemporary music as well as the classical works, and he has commissioned and premiered several new compositions. Nikula’s solo albums Hoepnadium and Piping Down the Valleys Wild were published 1996 and 2003.
Improvisation is also an important part of Nikula’s work – for ex. in Free Okapi ensemble. He teaches bass clarinet at the Sibelius Academy.

Jukka Kääriäinen is a musician focused on experimental music. Depending on the situation, Jukka’s instruments of choice include an acoustic guitar with preparations or an electric guitar with a bag full of effects. Kääriäinen has performed in many European countries and at international festivals in the United Kingdom, Spain, and France. In addition to solo concerts, he regularly performs in bands and has collaborated with many leading European improvisers such as Teppo Hauta-Aho, Kalle Kalima, Harri Sjöström, Axel Dörner, Kriton Beyer, Rieko Okuda, Anil Eraslan, Mikko Innanen, and Joel Grip, premiering works by composers such as Riikka Talvitie, Sebastian Hilli, Sami Klemola, Clara de Asis, and Tytti Arola.
