    1.9. / Heli Hartikainen: Interbody + Flux

    Tuesday 1.9.2026 at 19.00 at Toinen Kerros, award-winning saxophonist, composer and sound artist Heli Hartikainen performs two works: Interbody (released as an EP in April 2026), and a pre-premiere of Flux, an upcoming commission for Oulu2026. 

    Cal Cashin from Loud and Quiet Magazine wrote: “Interbody is a delight in exploratory noise making. Hartikainen’s sax is meshed with the live electronics of an erratic sampler, with their playing percussive and rolling to match the barrage of scattergun electronics; a barbed and pointy exemplar of contemporary soundscape work.” 

    Flux, a work for tenor saxophone, electromechanical solenoids, sensor controlled electronics and speakers, is a commission for Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture and will be performed at Oulu Cathedral on 18.9.2026.

    MARIJA KOVAČEVIĆ

    Serbian born, New York City based violinist Marija Kovačević works in classical, experimental and improvised music. Her project “Music for Broken Violins” is an exploration of sonic textures with broken violins, bows and their fragments. In addition to four albums of solo work, broken violins also appear on “Rainy Afternoon near Paris” album with Thierry Müller, “Push Broken Duet” album with Romain Perrot (available on Chocolate Monk), “Bez Vremena” album with Paul Collins and Quentin Rollet (available on Astres d’Or), “Playable Litter” album with Theo Gowans (available on Scatter Archive) and most recently “Unstringed” album with Leandro Barzabal (available on Liquid Library). Marija’s fifth solo album is set for release this year on Relative Pitch Records. The project has traveled internationally to the UK, Europe and USA.

    Viktor Toikkanen is a composer, sound engineer and multimedia artist from Helsinki, Finland. Navigating between electronic music, multimedia, contemporary classical, free improvisation, and performance art, Toikkanen refuses to adhere to a single style, constantly seeking new ways of self-expression.

    Jonas Hammerer
    Jonas Hammerer is a Vienna-based musician and sound artist working with 
    synthetic, process-oriented systems for live performances, sound 
    installations and collaborative works.
    In his artistic practice he uses analog and digital sound synthesis as 
    material and form-giving process, exploring instability and emergent 
    behavior in which form develops without fixed compositional structures. 
    He also realizes commissioned sound works and audio software for artists 
    and cultural institutions.
    He studied electroacoustic and experimental music at the University of 
    Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he was working at the Artistic 
    Research Center as part of the AESR sound projection lab. He is a member 
    of kv.r., an independent venue and collective organizing experimental 
    music shows in Vienna.

    Fabian Lanzmaier
    Fabian Lanzmaier is a musician and sound artist living in Vienna. He is 
    currently focusing on live performances that incorporate real-time audio 
    synthesis and multichannel speaker setups, as well as site-specific 
    audio installations, which often emerge from collaborative processes. He 
    is interested in the possibilities and surprises that arise when working 
    with systems and situations involving chance and unpredictability.

    Orion Boughton
    Orion Boughton (they/them) aka DJ Jorts is a music producer, 
    saxophonist, and audio engineer based in Portland Oregon. They hold a 
    Bachelor of Arts from Portland State University in Sonic Arts and Music 
    Production. Orion has versatile musical experience, including large 
    ensemble wind band, contemporary chamber music, jazz, hyperpop, rap, 
    folk, live sound, and sound art. Fusing their skills of performance and 
    production, Orion bends the medium of sound to their artistic vision, 
    taking influence from the environment and world around them. They have 
    performed both independently and in ensembles across the US, in Finland, 
    and in Slovenia as part of the Etno Histeria World Orchestra.

    Devina Boughton
    Devina Boughton (they/them) is a versatile performer hailing from rainy 
    Portland, OR, based in Helsinki, Finland. With a Bachelors degree from 
    Berklee College of Music, Devina moved to Helsinki as a 2021-22 
    Fulbright Grant recipient, and graduated from Sibelius Academy's Global 
    Music department with a Masters degree in 2025. They were a 2024-25 
    Microtonal Music Studios Resident, and received Finlandia Foundation 
    funding in Summer 2025. Devina serves as artistic director of Symbioosi 
    Choir (2023-present), and works as a freelancer in Helsinki and beyond, 
    as a performer, composer, artistic researcher, and pedagogue. Devina 
    explores and intertwines sound worlds, often blurring improvisation and 
    composition together. They are inspired by timbre, tuning, melody, 
    groove, nature, human experiences, words, and are passionate about 
    interdisciplinary collaboration. Their art-science Flagellate 
    Collective´s project Playing with Algae, combining micro- and macro 
    algae with Nordic shepherd´s horns, is supported by the KONE Foundation 
    in 2026. You may find them drinking coffee or tea, exploring nature, 
    practicing Finnish, baking, or reading.

    Forces
    Constantly mutating rhythms and sharp digital textures shape the sound 
    of Forces. Forces is the electronic music project of Finnish 
    interdisciplinary artist Joonas Siren (they/them). Different live-coding 
    and processing techniques are used to make dense atomized swirls; 
    electronic and sometimes chaotic abstract oceans of sound. Forces’ music 
    has been released on Biodiversità Records, evo-natura, mappa,  Infinite 
    Machine, Gin & Platonic, Genot Centre, Conditional and Bio Future 
    Laboratory, and has also been played in DJ mixes by experimental 
    producers like Aphex Twin, Daniel Ruane and ZULI.

    In the 3rd of August, we will present performances from Lauren Sarah Hayes, a Scottish improviser and a sound artist, who has gained recognition for her embodied approach to computer music. Her music is a mix of experimental pop/live electronics/techno/noise/free improvisation and has been described as ‘voracious’ and ‘exhilarating’.

    Additionally 2 duos will perform, both of them playing together for the very first time.

    Lauri Hyvärinen & Sulo Kolehmainen have been aware of each other for a number of years, and despite the occasional aesthetic overlap, they have never played together. Whether the encounter will be an austere but an awkward train wreck, an assault of tiny needle pricks to the eardrums or a pile of flaming garbage inside a zen monastery, remains to be seen. Mostly likely the result will include all of the above.

    As the second duo of the evening we will experience an intriguing encounter of the wind player Matti Luokkanen and the vocalist/flutist Heliä Mailis Viirakivi. The prior has a strong background playing free jazz with various people for more than a decade, including in the band Fogelbörs. The latter is well versed in classical but folk influenced extended vocal and instrumental techniques, and has performed in various interdisciplinary and contemporary productions all over Europe. What brings the duo together is a strong backbone in improvisation and their love for playful spontaneity.

    Fragments is improvised sound and visuals duo by Libero Mureddu (physically modelled piano and effects) and Eevi Oittinen (live drawing). Fragments creates a performative space in which sounds and visuals are equal partners.

    Open Studio is a series of performances in which the duo will expose their artistic practice. In Open Studio 1, Mureddu and Oittinen will invite the audience into a dialogue about their creative process, exploring the “what” and “how” of their work. Following the conversation, the performance will be recorded.

    Peter J. Woods is a scholar and artist with a deep interest in experimental music, DIY arts communities, and communal knowledge production. His work pulls equally from the worlds of harsh noise and absurdist theatre. The performances build a sense of terror from simple imagery, muted text and an unpredictable barrage of silence and sound. Woods utilizes these approaches within a critical context, building on his scholarly work to challenge oppressive formations embedded within the musical contexts he finds himself in.

    OTOTOMY is the noise project of East Helsinki–based artist Matti Närekangas, born out of frustration with music as a form of expression. For OTOTOMY, sound holds meaning regardless of how it’s made. Blending analog elements, unusual recordings, and digital manipulation, he crafts chaotic soundscapes inspired by Engelbert Humperdinck, flying squirrels, escalators, death, the fear of abandonment and the ecstasy from observation of life. OTOTOMY has self-released two EPs HARD2BEGOD (2022) and FAILURE (2024) as well as the split NO SUGAR (2024) with Sasanian.

    Sirpa Kalla was born in 2024 in Portugal, in the dunes of Adraga. She thrives on unintentionally generated sounds, the atmosphere of old industrial areas and the roughness and rasp of rust and debris. Sirpa Kalla cuts random loops from cassettes found in the streets and abandoned buildings, combining them with minimalist synths and contact mic’d objects.

    GUNK is a group that has been active since 2011, their performance usually consists of drones, metallic scraping and raw minimalism, all wrapped up into conceptual improvisation. This is their first performance since 2019. Their new album “Hard” will be out summer 2025.

    Summer starts (yes, it’s summer) with hissing, screeching and snarling with this double feature in Toinen kerros. Bringing together Violent Shogun from Bordeaux, France who has released exquisite murky material under many pseudonyms and Keränen, who has been dubbed (among other things) as “the unsung hero of 00’s Mego-crew” and a “Finnish noise legend”. Probably needless to say that the evening will be a treat for those who enjoy the noisier side of things.

    Violent Shogun, from Bordeaux, France, has been creating his ambient noise since 2017, drawing influences as much from hissy tape murk or electronic waveforms as from the concrete chaos made by mishandled amplified objects. Many of these experimentations based on damaged drones, disintegrating tape loops, creaking metal or disrupted electronic feedback have since been captured on various tapes or CDs released by labels like Satatuhatta (Finland), Angst (Italy), Absurd Exposition (Canada), Buried In Slag And Debris (Canada).

    Keränen has been making experimental electronic music since the late 1990s. His work focuses on rudimentary live electronics, feedback, and improvisation. He primarily modes are vivid harsh noise and minimal electronic drones. In addition to his solo projects, he is a member of Paal Nilssen-Love Large Unit, Testicle Hazard, Pymathon, The Truckfuckers, and Gentle Evil. His discography includes around three dozen releases, ranging from cryptic underground tapes to more acclaimed works, such as the “Bats in the Attic” CD, which was a critic’s pick in The Wire in 2010. Keränen has performed extensively around the world and has collaborated with artists like Lasse Marhaug, Florian Hecker, Incapacitants, and many others.

Their work seeks the presence of sound and its path through repetition towards absence, the path of becoming hemmed in between the imagined and the real: a lead into the otherness of listening.     CHRIS CORSANO

    Drummer Chris Corsano has been working at the intersection of free jazz, avant-rock and experimental music since the late 90s. Corsano is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and innovative drummers in contemporary improvised music. He has developed a unique musical language that transcends traditional notions of what can be done with drums. Corsano’s playing partners come from the worlds of rock (e.g. Bill Orcutt), jazz (Joe McPhee, Rodrigo Amado) and experimental music. Corsano played on Björk’s Volta album and on the album’s world tour.

    DARIN GRAY

    Originally from St. Louis and now settled in Finland, bassist Darin Gray is known as a solo artist, tireless collaborator, session musician, improviser, composer, educator and Jim O’Rourke’s regular bassist for over 25 years. Gray’s discography includes over 150 releases. He has composed for film, theatre, dance and radio, and has toured extensively in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, Canada, Russia and Europe. Since 2005, Gray and Chris Corsano have performed together under the name Chikamorachi, most often with saxophonist Akira Sakata, either as a trio or in extended ensembles. Gray’s other projects include On Fillmore, a long-running duo with Glenn Kotche, Grand Ulena, Dazzling Killmen, You Fantastic! and Brise-Glace.

    SAMI PEKKOLA

    Saxophonist Sami Pekkola is one of the most active figures in Finnish experimental music and free jazz. Working in a variety of ensembles and projects, the energetic saxophonist has performed with electronic music pioneer Pekka Airaksinen and free jazz legend Peter Brötzmann, among others. In recent years, Pekkola has recorded with the Italian-Finnish band Muumiot and Oaagaada. The latter’s album “Music of Oaagaada” was selected by Bandcamp as one of the best jazz releases of November 2024. Recently, Pekkola has also been actively touring with Oiro Pena and Phardah.
