Silvia Tarozzi is a violinist, composer and improviser. The oral transmission of music and the form created through a deep immersion into the sound are traits of her musical research and find expression in several collaborations with composers as Éliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros, Pascale Criton, Cassandra Miller, Martin Arnold, Pierre -Yves Macé, Philip Corner.
Her projects are released by I dischi di Angelica, Unseen Worlds, New World Records, Potlatch. Her concerts have been recorded and broadcasted by BBC Radio and France Musique. She performs regularly in festivals and venues in Europe, North America, Canada, Mexico.

Antti Tolvi is a sound artist and performer from Turku Finland. Antti has been one of the most important names in the experimental music scene in Finland since 2002, and has performed on three continents totalling to over 400 shows and 14 solo records. Since 2016, Antti has held 15 solo exhibitions and participated in 22 group exhibitions. 
Freedom, peace, gratitude and minimalist aesthetics are often reflected in Anttis works which combine sound, light, wind, water, bodily sensations and living visual elements. The works have been exhibited e.g. Rovaniemen Taidemuseo (2022), Helsinki Juhlaviikot (2021), Musica Nova festivals (2021), Huuto Galleria HKI (2021), Helsinki Biennale (Teemu Lehmusruusu working group 2021), Pori Art Museum (2020), Titanik Gallery TKU (2022 & 2019) and Sinne Galleria HKI (2017). Antti Tolvi’s work Noise and form is part of the Wihuri Foundation’s collection. Antti has also been organizing the annual Kiilan äänipäivät sound art festival on Kemiönsaari since 2014.

Sergio Castrillón is a classically trained composer and cellist well versed in improvisation and multidisciplinary projects. He is actively collaborating with a diverse set of artists from different musical territories and backgrounds. Since 2009 his work has been focused on electroacoustic/instrumental and acousmatic music, as well as music theatre and performance. His pieces have been premiered and performed in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Poland, Peru, Sweden, Spain and Uruguay.

Natalia Castrillón is a multifaceted harpist, singer and a composer whose musical roots lie in traditional Latin American music, as well as classical and experimental music. Based in Helsinki for several years she is much in demand as a musician who is able to cross genre boundaries and touch the listener. Castrillón has developed her own personal way of playing, in which she combines innovative, percussive techniques with more traditional harp playing. Besides the lever harp, she uses the llanera harp, which is typically featured in the traditional joropo music of Colombia and Venezuela, also known as música llanera (music of the plains).

OPEN CALL – sonic arts exhibition at Oksasenkatu 11 in March 2023 – DL for proposals 30/11/2022

Welcome to participate in the open call for a sonic art exhibition in Oksasenkatu 11 gallery that takes place in March 2023. The idea of the exhibition is to present the creators and the works of contemporary sonic art from Finland and abroad. The proposal for the open call can be, for example, a sound installation, a live performance, a performative gesture, a graphic presentation, text/(moving)image based work, online piece, or a lecture. The exhibition is organised by Äänen Lumo ry, together with Minerva Juolahti and J. Koho. 

The open call is open for all and the deadline for proposals is on November 30th, 2022. The work should deal with sound but the format is limited only by imagination. The submission can be a pre-existing work. There is no specific theme defined for the open call, but we are especially looking for works where sonic art is thought of in a surprising or unconventional manner and with a relation to the exhibition space and its location. It is important to bear in mind the limited size of the gallery space and the fact that it’s located on the ground floor and the basement of an apartment building. When selecting works, we pay particular attention to how the works fit together with each other and the gallery space. The purpose of the exhibition is to present the widest possible spectrum and diversity of sonic art.

The proposal should include a maximum one page proposal that contains a detailed description of the content and the medium of the piece, and a cv.

Oksasenkatu 11 is an artist-run, non-profit gallery. Participation in the exhibition requires taking part in the supervision of the exhibition. The selected artists are themselves responsible for the technology and the installation, and de-installation of their works. There is no guaranteed fee for taking part in the exhibition, but this might change in case of a successful grant application. The exhibition follows the principles of a safer space. Artists selected for the exhibition will be notified in mid-December, 2022.

For the third week of August, 2022 Äänen Lumo / Charm of Sound takes over lumbung radio presenting every day of the week a new episode of perspectives on sonic practices from the extended sonic arts community. The episodes are re-stremed on lumbung radio between August 25th – September 25th, 2022. (See more detailed schedule below!)

lumbung Radio is an inter-local online community radio part of the documenta fifteen exhibition in Kassel, Germany between June 18th – September 25th, 2022. The radio is an open online broadcast that comprises of an inter-local network of distinct radios and audio practices and is coordinated by the Helsinki-and-Geneva-based collective Station of Commons. lumbung Radio operates in no specific time zones, and streams multiple languages, music, and art. The radio operates as a decentralized network of nodes that uses internet without its hegemonic agency. The intention is producing an audiophonic common space built on the multiplication of the existing practices of its contributors.

For lumbung radio Äänen Lumo ry has reached out to the extended network of members and collaborators to contribute with their sounds for creating a sound collage of the inter-local sonic community.

Lauri Hyvärinen

Lauri Hyvärinen (b. 1986, Helsinki) uses guitar as a sound source. His sound and music related activities are of theoretical and practical nature and improvisation remains his primary medium and interest. He has performed in Europe, Japan, USA and Russia. Hyvärinen collaborates with Sähkökitarakvartetti, Ilia Belorukov, Clara de Asís, Preerioiden pääelinkeino and others.

Zherbin

Zherbin is a noise artist and an experimental instrument builder based in Helsinki, known to some as a guitarist of a noise rock band Fate Vs Free Willy. Zherbin’s solo work is a way of dealing with anxieties caused by eco-collapse, emerging totalitarianism and personal mental health issues through submerging oneself in noise produced by handmade electronic circuits, tape loops and found objects.

Mancianti Santorsa Tramontana – Autophagy II

Autophagy II, a piece for DIY augmented Tam and electric guitars, is written around two instruments whose sound production happens via acoustic means (the resonance of the Tam and the vibration of strings in two electric guitars), but which are profoundly modified by an electro-mechanic augmentation. This augmentation not only radically transforms the instruments’ sound, but also the ways to interact with them, rendering many of the known performing techniques unusable.

The score is thought of as a map to explore this ever-changing sound-world. It provides strategies and hints at creating given sonic situations, but it’s closer to a recipe than to a traditional music score, in that it sets conditions, but does not prescribe outcomes. Every new combination of performers, physical instruments and performing space will produce a radically new result. The piece is a ritualistic trip in the territory between performative, compositional and material agencies and, like in every trip, actual or metaphoric, the journey is never without surprises.

The trio presents the outcomes of the second chapter of the residency program that Andrea Mancianti together with Äänen Lumo and MUU Helsinki Contemporary Art Centre have organised in the past year.

The residency program, made possible thanks to support from Suomen Kulttuurirahasto, was developed to bring to Finland the collaboration between the composer and two young Italian musicians: Ruben Mattia Santorsa and Federico Tramontana. With their practice the three are engaged in an attempt to investigate and rethink the relationship between composer/performer and technology.

Learning by Ear is an evening of sound and discussions around sound. The guests of the evening have different, often entangled, roles related to sound: as sound practitioners, pedagogues and sound students. During the evening they will present their reflections, their practices, and their art.What does it mean to learn, make, and teach sound practices in the context of new media technology, where often the instruments and the practices are invented, learnt, and even taught in the same process.

Antti Ikonen: Designing Sounds for a Children’s Hospital

In this talk, I will introduce an actual large-scale interior sound design project in order to delineate the characteristics of sound as an element, material, and subject of discussion in a bigger planning context. The Helsinki New Children’s Hospital was completed and taken into use in 2018. Aside from patient rooms and facilities for medical operations, large areas of this hospital are being equipped with loudspeakers. The loudspeakers are used to play a generative ambient soundscape specially designed and tailored for the hospital.

Contemplative listening is the most crucial skill and fundamental method when designing sounds for specific environments. It is essential to know the ingredients and understand the behaviour of the soundscape in question, and especially when using generative methods in (re)constructing or (re)creating a soundscape this cannot be fully achieved without listening for an extended period of time. Furthermore, soundscapes and aural interiors can be listened to in a reduced way as they were ambient music.

Alejandro Olarte: Did I just make an experimental sound performance? – Serendipity between the lab and the stage.

In this presentation, I will explore different aspects of the experimental attitude lived as a sound artist, researcher, and pedagogue. Where does the artwork live? in the experimentation? in the planning? in the afterthoughts? Did I just create an instrument, a performance, a composition, an experiment, a patch, a sample? Where and how is the audience involved? Can this be taught at all? Why do we still ask those old questions?

Marloes van Son: Objects of expectation – The layers of a sound-device

During this talk I will unpack some layers of my sound-device building and performance practice: How does the visual design of a sound-object influence our interaction with it? How to facilitate intuitive ways to interact with different interfaces? What expectations do certain designs create and how to transform these expectations into curiosity?

Antti Ikonen (MA) works in Aalto University as lecturer of sound design and music, the head of Sound in New Media Master’s studies and a member of Sound and Physical Interaction research group. Ikonen’s work covers music and sound design for a wide range of different kinds of media, performances and works of art, including contemporary dance, theatre, short films, radio plays, art installations, and new media. His current research relates to Helsinki New Children’s Hospital soundscape which was designed and realised by Ikonen and his students. In 2019, the soundscape project was awarded with Grand Prix in International Sound Awards in Hamburg, Germany.

Alejandro Olarte: I am an electroacoustic musician devoted to pedagogy, artistic research, live performance, and digital lutherie. I am a lecturer in Electroacoustic Music at the Sibelius Academy, Center for Music and Technology of the Helsinki Arts University. I am a Doctor of Music graduated under the supervision of Andrew Bentley with a project called “Elements of electroacoustic music improvisation and performance” available here. I studied classical guitar and electroacoustic music in Colombia with Ramiro Isaza, Roberto Garcia, and Horacio Lapidus between 1995 and 2001. In 2009 I graduated from Generative Improvisation and Musical Acoustics at the National Conservatory of Paris under the guidance of composer Alain Savouret and engineer Charles Besnaionou. In 2010 I completed studies at Paris University in Computer Music with Horacio Vaggione and Anne Sedes. My interests are electronic experimental music, sound art, computer music, performance art, experimentalism, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. I love supercollider and modular synths, and my biggest passion is to teach and learn.

Marloes van Son builds sound objects and digital synths. She uses these in combination with graphic scores, layered vocals, occasional beats and field recordings in experimental compositions. Using her self built instruments she creates atmospheric soundscapes with a pop twist. She performs both under her own name and collaborates with Alex van Giersbergen in their audiovisual project ALOES. http://marloesvanson.nl/

Ääneen – Sonic Arts Month in February 2021 is realised in collaboration between MUU ry, Äänen Lumo, and several actors in the local field of sonic arts. The programme has been formed through an open call for co-curation and the events are supported by Niilo Helanderin säätiö and the City of Helsinki. Due to the recent development of the pandemic, the festival collaborates also with Station of Commons, a collaborative initiative on digital commoning practices.
